In this oil painting session, we will take a different approach to a familiar subject: an armchair. Rather than focusing on precise details and realistic representation, we will explore how colour, shape and expressive brushwork can convey the character of an object. Our main challenge will be simplifying a complex three-dimensional structure into a composition of confident shapes and colour planes. We will work with the contrast between soft pink upholstery and a dark background, exploring how a limited palette can create a striking visual effect. Particular attention will be given to expressive brushwork, paint texture and the balance between abstraction and representation. We will experiment with broader strokes, allowing the material qualities of oil paint to become an active part of the image.
The session is suitable for beginners and returning students alike, with step-by-step guidance and individual feedback from professional artist Andrey Novikov.
