In this special two-part oil painting course, we will create a traditional still life featuring freshly baked bread, butter and figs. Across two sessions, we will explore how different textures can be expressed through the thickness, direction and character of individual brushstrokes.
Our main focus will be on the material qualities of each object: the rough, golden crust of bread, its soft and porous interior, the smooth surface of butter and the delicate flesh of ripe figs. We will study how light reveals these differences and how a restrained palette of warm browns, creamy yellows and deep purples brings the composition together.
Working across two sessions gives us the opportunity to develop a painting beyond a quick study. During the first lesson, we will establish the composition, proportions and main colour relationships. In the second, we will refine the forms, develop the textures and introduce expressive finishing details.

The course is suitable for beginners and returning students alike, with individual guidance and feedback from professional artist Andrey Novikov throughout.
