In this oil painting session, we will explore one of the most fascinating challenges in traditional painting — drapery. Using a piece of suspended fabric as our subject, we will study how gravity, tension and light shape the folds and movement of cloth. Our main focus will be on understanding the geometry of fabric. We will learn to identify the structure of folds, distinguish between illuminated surfaces and deep shadows, and translate these observations into confident, expressive brushwork. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between warm ochre and golden tones in the fabric and the cooler blues of the background. We will also experiment with simplifying complex folds into larger shapes, allowing colour and tonal relationships to suggest volume without excessive detail.
The session is suitable for beginners and returning students alike, with step-by-step guidance and individual feedback from professional artist Andrey Novikov.
