Contact is a surreal mezzotint engraving by Andrey Novikov, part of his conceptual Fog Project. Known for his mastery of one of the rarest and most intricate printmaking techniques, Novikov creates here a dramatic dialogue between antiquity and the cosmos. The composition shows the colossal head of Marcus Aurelius hovering above a lunar expanse. Below, fragments of machinery and a solitary astronaut embody themes of history, isolation, and humanity’s fragile reach into the unknown. Rendered in the velvety depth of mezzotint, the image becomes both otherworldly and profoundly human. This work belongs to a limited edition of 30 hand-pulled prints, each signed and numbered by the artist. It comes with a certificate of authenticity, a custom Larson-Juhl mountboard and backing board, and protective packaging. Sized at 35×25 cm, it is ready for elegant framing in A3 format. Contact also resonates with the artist’s monumental graphic work of the same title, whose original painting was acquired into a private collection almost immediately after its first exhibition. Based on this imagery, Novikov collaborated with Dr. Jordan Stone, PhD in Astrobiology at Imperial College London, creating a unique cross-disciplinary dialogue between art and science. For collectors, this print represents not only a work of technical mastery but also a cultural statement: a bridge between heritage and futurism, art and astrobiology, solitude and transcendence.
