Wheel is an original oil painting by Andrey Novikov, created entirely by hand using traditional painting materials and techniques. It is a unique work — not a print, reproduction, or digitally produced image transferred onto canvas. Novikov builds the image directly in oil paint, combining controlled modelling of the figure with visible, economical brushwork. Areas of exposed canvas, thin passages of colour and more substantial painted surfaces remain part of the finished work, allowing the material process of painting to stay visible. The painting is finished with Florentine varnish, a traditional wax-based picture varnish. Unlike a high-gloss synthetic finish, it produces a softer, more restrained surface, enriching the depth of the oil colours while preserving the physical character of the brushwork. Wheel is a characteristic example of Novikov’s practice: traditional figurative oil painting used as a medium for contemporary imagery and ideas.
