Wheel belongs to The Garden of Earthly Delights III: Feast of Kings, the third chapter of Andrey Novikov’s ongoing Garden of Earthly Delights project. The series grows from Novikov’s personal “curiosity library” — drawings from life, museum studies, historical references, animals, costumes, objects and fragments of contemporary visual culture. These sources are brought together without attempting to reconcile their original contexts. Familiar elements become strange through proximity, creating images that seem historically recognisable while belonging to no particular time. In Feast of Kings, identity itself becomes unstable. Costume, theatrical gesture, masks and altered appearances turn the figures into participants in an ambiguous ritual rather than characters with a fixed narrative. Wheel emerges from this world: intimate in scale, but connected to the larger visual language of the series. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and incorporates Florentine varnish, a material Novikov has developed as part of his painting practice. Traditionally associated with the gilded patina of picture frames, here the varnish is brought inside the image itself. Its surface changes with the viewing angle, moving from deep black towards a warm golden reflection and subtly altering the surrounding colours. The effect belongs to the physical painting and changes as the viewer moves around it. This is the original 2026 painting by Andrey Novikov, signed by the artist and offered as a unique work.
