Bunny Hat belongs to The Garden of Earthly Delights III: Feast of Kings, the third chapter of Andrey Novikov’s ongoing Garden of Earthly Delights project. The series brings together images gathered from the artist’s own visual world — life drawings, historical costume, animals, museum studies and fragments of contemporary culture. Novikov deliberately allows references from different periods and contexts to coexist, interested in the new meanings that emerge when familiar things are combined in unfamiliar ways. In Feast of Kings, costume and disguise become particularly important. Masks, elaborate dress and obscured faces interrupt individual identity, turning the figures into participants in a ritual whose rules remain uncertain. In Bunny Hat, something apparently playful becomes strangely ceremonial: the animal form functions simultaneously as costume, mask and extravagant headdress. The painting is made traditionally in oil on canvas, with the physical surface and individual brushwork remaining an integral part of the work. Novikov also introduces Florentine varnish into the composition — a material originally intended to imitate the golden patina of antique picture frames. Depending on the light and viewing angle, it shifts from deep black to a warm metallic gold, bringing something normally associated with the frame into the painted image itself. Bunny Hat is the original 2026 painting by Andrey Novikov and a unique work.
